According to the 2000 census, the county has a total area of 2,026.93 square miles , of which 1,596.35 square miles is land and 430.58 square miles is water. It is the 12th largest county east of the Mississippi River and is larger than both the states of Delaware and Rhode Island. As of April, 2007, only two other areas in Alabama have received what is the "highest environmental status" in the state. A portion of Wolf Bay and 42 miles of the Tensaw River in northern Baldwin county have received the designation.
